About Us
Williams - Rounds Welsh Springer Spaniel Starters was founded in 1980, in Upstate NY, on the South Bay area of Oneida Lake. The founding, was motivated by a passion for the breed, and therefore has always has been, and will always be, a passionate HOBBY. IT IS NOT A BUSINESS. It was the Fall of 1979, when I purchased my first Welsh Springer Starter, (who I named Beau - for Beautiful), as a 12 week old pup, from Ricky Owen Miller, who lived with his wife on the North side of Oneida Lake. As was I, Ricky was an avid hunter of upland birds and waterfowl.
Beau was a natural hunter and was so willing to please me, that training him was a breeze. As well, there was an abundance of ruffed grouse, woodcock, waterfowl, rabbits and squirrel, which facilitated Beau's early training in hunting.
It was not long before I entered Beau, in the AKC sanctioned Working Dog Event, (WD / WDX hunting tests), where he earned his Working Dog Certificate at his first event, and then his Working Dog Excellent Certificate at his second event. At the first Working Dog event, I met Pat Saunders, who had some of the better performing Welsh Springers. Pat, at that time, also had a litter, from which I picked a female, who we called Dee.
Dee progressed in her training very rapidly, (thanks in part to her education from Beau), and she earned her Working Dog Excellent certificate at around 6 months of age. From there I began to implement a breeding program that was directed at maintaining and improving the breed, with an emphasis on working virtues, as there were plenty of people, breeding for the conformation show. That continues to be the trend today, although it would seem that in recent years there has been a significantly marvelous number of breeders campaigning their "Wel-she's" in obedience, agility, tracking, etc. Our breeding program goals remain the same. Occasionally we "SHOW", or event enter our Welsh Starter Spaniel family members, but mostly we just enjoy them for who they are; Family members, companions and hunting buddies.
From time to time, we have new Welsh Starter / Spaniel family members join us in our ongoing adventures. We are very much pleasured by having an opportunity to share them with others. For those who are well qualified, (we encourage you to call early for information about ownership of one or two of our adoptable, and adorable, Welsh Starter Spaniel family member treasures).
